Pakistan visa photos are issued through the NADRA POVS portal
Pakistan visas are processed exclusively through the Pakistan Online Visa System (POVS), operated by NADRA on behalf of the Ministry of Interior. Since January 2021, embassy walk-ins, mail-in applications, and visa application centres have been retired for inbound visas, so every applicant uploads a digital photograph directly to visa.nadra.gov.pk. The same 35×45 mm specification applies to every visa category, from tourist and family visit to business, work, student, journalist, and religious tourism.
NADRA enforces the photo rules through an automated biometric facial-recognition engine built into the portal. The uploader includes a built-in cropper that locks the image to the official aspect ratio, and the validator checks the subject against published rules before the application can be submitted. Photographs that fall outside the spec are rejected at upload, which delays the entire visa file until a compliant image is supplied.
Since January 2026, NADRA treats the uploaded photograph as a biometric identifier alongside fingerprints and iris data, which means borderline images are flagged more aggressively than in previous years. Meeting the NADRA POVS subject requirements on the first attempt is the cleanest way to avoid repeat uploads, manual review, and downstream processing delays.
Pakistan visa photo requirements at a glance
NADRA’s Pakistan Online Visa System enforces a single photo standard for every visa category. The rules below cover what the applicant must look like in the final frame.
Expression & pose
- Neutral expressionThe applicant must hold a neutral expression with the mouth closed. Smiles, visible teeth, frowns, and exaggerated expressions are rejected by NADRA’s facial-recognition checks.
- Direct gazeEyes must be open, in sharp focus, and looking straight at the camera. Red-eye is not accepted.
- Head straightThe head must face the camera squarely with no tilt, turn, or angle. NADRA’s biometric engine auto-rejects profile or angled poses.
- Shoulders squareShoulders should be level and facing forward so both edges of the face are visible in the frame.
Eyewear & lenses
- EyeglassesGlasses are strictly prohibited, including clear prescription lenses. NADRA’s biometric engine auto-rejects any photo where glasses are detected, and this is the most common cause of rejection on the POVS portal.
- Sunglasses & tinted lensesSunglasses, tinted lenses, and transition lenses are not accepted under any circumstances.
Hair & facial hair
- Hair off the faceHair must not cover the eyes or eyebrows. Long bangs should be pinned back so the forehead, eyes, and brow line are fully visible.
- Face edges visibleNADRA POVS requires either both ears or the full edges of the face to be visible. Pull hair back so the cheeks and jawline are clearly outlined; ears may be covered by religious headwear.
Headwear
- Religious or medical onlyHeadwear is permitted only for religious or documented medical reasons. The chin, forehead, and both cheeks must remain fully visible, and the covering must not cast shadows across the face.
- Hats and capsNon-religious hats, caps, and hoods are not accepted.
Jewelry & accessories
- Headphones and earpiecesHeadphones, earbuds, wireless earpieces, and hands-free devices must be removed before the photo is taken.
- Large jewelryHeavy or oversized jewelry that obscures facial features or casts shadows is not accepted. Small, flat earrings and chains are acceptable.
Cosmetics
- Natural appearanceMakeup should be light and natural. Heavy cosmetics that alter the applicant’s normal appearance or skin tone are rejected, since the uploaded photo is matched against biometric records.
Clothing
- Everyday clothingRegular street clothing should be worn. The garment should provide visible contrast against the white background.
- No uniformsUniforms are not accepted. Daily religious dress is permitted.
Photo recency
- Taken within 6 monthsThe photograph must be taken within the last six months and must reflect the applicant’s current appearance. A new photo is required after any significant change in appearance.
Dimensions, resolution & background.
Head position & camera distance.
- Head height, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must be between 32 mm and 36 mm (roughly 72–79% of the photo height).
- Eyes must sit between 21 mm and 25 mm from the bottom of the photo.
- The head must be centered horizontally in the frame with a small symmetrical margin on each side.
- Both shoulders must be square to the camera and visible. Three-quarter angles or rotated torsos are not accepted.
- The full face from chin to crown must be inside the frame with proper top margin.
Pakistan accepts more than one size — we generate them all.
Pakistan publishes more than one acceptable format depending on where you submit your application — domestic passport offices, the official online portal, and regional consulates abroad can each call for a different print or pixel size. We render every variant below from the same source photo, so the head sits at the same physical position across files, and each one arrives in your order email with a clear filename indicating which submission channel it's for.

How recent the photo must be.
Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.
You need a new photo if you’ve had…
- Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
- A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
- Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
- A gender transition that has changed your appearance
You do not need a new photo just because of…
- A new hair color
- Growing or removing a beard or moustache
- Ordinary, minor aging
- A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
Photos for infants and young children.
NADRA relaxes a small number of subject rules for the youngest applicants.
Infants (under 1 year)
NADRA recognises that infants cannot hold a fixed pose, and waives the strictest expression rules for this tier.
- Eyes may be closedInfants under one year may have their eyes closed in the photo.
- Expression relaxedThe neutral-expression and closed-mouth requirements are waived for infants, but photos showing the child crying or laughing are still rejected.
- Child alone in frameThe infant must be photographed alone against a plain white background. Supporting hands, arms, clothing, toys, or the faces of parents or guardians must not appear anywhere in the frame.
Other things to know.
A few aspects of Pakistan’s visa photo process catch applicants off guard.
Online-only intake
Since January 2021, NADRA’s Pakistan Online Visa System is the sole channel for inbound visa applications. Embassies, consulates, and visa application centres no longer accept walk-in, mail-in, or printed-photo submissions for Pakistan visas.
Biometric photo matching
NADRA treats the uploaded photograph as a biometric identifier alongside fingerprints and iris scans. Automated rejection thresholds are tight, and borderline photos that pass in other countries are routinely returned by the POVS validator.
Glasses are the top rejection cause
The POVS validator detects and auto-rejects any visible eyewear, including clear prescription glasses. Applicants who normally wear glasses must remove them before the photo is taken.
Visa on Arrival and ETA
Visa on Arrival and Electronic Travel Authorisation requests are filed through POVS in advance and use the same photo specification as regular visa categories. There is no separate on-arrival photo capture.

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.
When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.
- Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
- Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
- Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
- Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
