GENERAL INFORMATION

Netherlands visa photo rules from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Netherlands visa photos are governed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken), with the technical specification published by the National Office for Identity Data (RVIG) as the Photomatrix Guidelines 2020. The same specification covers Schengen short-stay (Type C) visas, MVV long-stay visas, Caribbean visas for Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten and the BES islands, and residence permits handled by the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND).

There is no e-visa portal for Schengen applications. Applicants submit a printed 35×45 mm photo with the dossier at a VFS Global or TLScontact visa application centre, or at a Dutch embassy or consulate, and provide a live digital biometric capture on the same visit for the EU Visa Information System. For MVV and residence-permit cases, the sponsor uploads a scanned copy of the same photo through the My IND online portal.

VFS and embassy staff verify each print against a transparent Photomatrix overlay that checks head height, face width and framing. Photos that fall outside the Photomatrix tolerances, show the applicant in a non-neutral pose, or fail the no-alteration rule are rejected at the counter, which delays the application and forces a return visit.

REQUIREMENTS

Netherlands visa photo requirements

The Photomatrix 2020 governs every Dutch visa photo, from Schengen short-stays to MVV long-stay dossiers. These are the subject-side rules VFS Global and consulate staff verify against the transparent overlay.

Expression & pose

  • Neutral expressionKeep a relaxed, neutral face with no smile, frown, or raised eyebrows. The Photomatrix requires a calm expression that captures a true likeness of the applicant.
  • Mouth closedThe mouth must be closed with no visible teeth.
  • Eyes open and forwardBoth eyes must be fully open and looking straight at the camera. Squinting is not accepted.
  • Head straightFace the camera squarely. The head must not be tilted or turned, and the eyes must sit on a horizontal line.
  • Shoulders squareSit or stand with shoulders straight and level to the camera.
  • Photo recencyThe photo must be no more than six months old and must still be a clear likeness. A newer photo is required if appearance has materially changed.

Eyewear & lenses

  • EyeglassesClear prescription glasses are permitted under the Photomatrix 2020. Lenses must be fully transparent with no glare or reflections, and frames must not cover any part of the eyes.
  • Tinted lensesTinted, photochromic, or sunglass lenses are prohibited. Both eyes and irises must be clearly visible.

Hair & face

  • Face fully visibleHair must not cover the eyes, eyebrows, or the outline of the face. Both sides of the face from chin to forehead must be clearly visible.
  • Fringe and long hairA long fringe is acceptable as long as the eyes and the full face remain visible. Hair may fall in front of the ears.
  • EarsEars do not need to be visible. The unique Dutch ear-to-ear face width measurement of 16 to 20 mm must still be verifiable on the print.

Headwear

  • General ruleHeadwear is not permitted in Dutch visa photos.
  • Religious or medical exceptionHead coverings worn for religious, philosophical, or documented medical reasons are accepted. They must be plain, a single colour, contrast with the background, and leave the face fully visible from chin to forehead with no shadow cast on the face.

Jewelry & cosmetics

  • Earrings and piercingsEarrings, facial piercings, and visible tattoos are allowed provided they do not reflect light, cast shadows, or obscure facial features.
  • MakeupEveryday makeup is acceptable but must not alter natural skin tone or facial features. Heavy contouring and shimmer or glossy finishes that catch the light should be avoided.

Clothing

  • Everyday clothingWear regular day clothing. Uniforms are not permitted.
  • Contrast with backgroundClothing should contrast with the background of the photo so the outline of the head and shoulders is clearly defined.

Photo quality

  • No shadows on the faceThe face must be evenly lit, with no shadows cast across the features by hair, headwear, or harsh overhead light.
  • No red-eyeRed-eye is not accepted. Eye colour must appear natural.

RECENCY

How recent the photo must be.

Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.

You need a new photo if you’ve had…

  • Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
  • A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
  • Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
  • A gender transition that has changed your appearance

You do not need a new photo just because of…

  • A new hair color
  • Growing or removing a beard or moustache
  • Ordinary, minor aging
  • A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
INFANTS & CHILDREN

Photos for infants and young children.

The Photomatrix relaxes several pose and expression rules for very young children, recognising that infants and toddlers cannot pose on cue.

Children under 6

Applicants under six years old are exempt from the standard rules on eye alignment, head tilt, shoulder position, neutral expression, gaze direction, and closed mouth. The face must still be fully visible and the head upright.

  • Eyes must be openClosed-eye photos are not accepted, even for infants. Both eyes must be open in the final image.
  • No one else in the frameParents, hands, arms, pacifiers, toys, and other props must not appear in the photo. Any support used to prop the child must be completely hidden.
  • Face fully visibleThe face must be clear of hair, blankets, and clothing, with the head shown upright and centred.
  • Relaxed pose acceptedA neutral expression, mouth closed, and a perfectly straight head are not required. A natural infant expression is acceptable as long as the face is recognisable.
COUNTRY NOTES

Other things to know.

A handful of Dutch visa photo conventions catch applicants off guard even when the photo otherwise looks correct.

Ear-to-ear face width check

VFS Global and consulate staff verify Dutch visa photos with a transparent Photomatrix overlay. The face must measure 16 to 20 mm ear-to-ear on the printed 35 by 45 mm photo. This metric is unique to the Netherlands and is a frequent rejection trigger.

Print plus on-site biometrics

Every applicant submits a printed 35 by 45 mm photo with the dossier and also sits for a live digital biometric capture at the visa application centre for the EU Visa Information System. Both steps are mandatory for first-time applicants and every 59 months thereafter.

No e-visa channel

Schengen and Caribbean visas are issued as physical stickers. There is no online portal that accepts an uploaded photo in place of a printed copy. The IND online portal handles MVV and residence-permit document uploads only.

Print handling at the counter

The print must arrive at the counter undamaged, with no staples, paper clips, creases, smudges, or ink marks. Scanned reproductions of older photos are rejected.

PRINT QUALITY

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.

When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.

  • Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
  • Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
  • Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
  • Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
