GENERAL INFORMATION

Kosovo visa photo rules from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora

Kosovo visa photos are governed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora (MFAD), the consular authority that issues Type A airport transit, Type C short-stay, and Type D long-stay visas. The MFAD aligns its photo standard with ICAO Doc 9303 and the Schengen Visa Code, so a single 35×45 mm specification applies to every visa category, with no separate format for tourist, business, study, work, or family reunification applications.

Applications reach MFAD through two channels. The official eVisa portal at e-visa.rks-gov.net accepts a digital upload for all visa categories. Walk-in and mail-in applications at Kosovo embassies and consulates require physical prints, typically two identical copies. Kosovo does not use a global VFS or TLS visa application centre contract, so self-supplied photos remain accepted on every channel and there is no mandatory on-site biometric capture.

A photo that misses the MFAD requirements is grounds for the consular officer or the eVisa portal to reject the submission and return the file. The MFAD also enforces a strict recency rule, requiring the photo to be taken within the last month, which is tighter than the typical six-month standard seen elsewhere. Getting the photo right the first time avoids a resubmission and the delay that comes with it.

RECENCY

How recent the photo must be.

Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.

You need a new photo if you’ve had…

  • Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
  • A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
  • Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
  • A gender transition that has changed your appearance

You do not need a new photo just because of…

  • A new hair color
  • Growing or removing a beard or moustache
  • Ordinary, minor aging
  • A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
INFANTS & CHILDREN

Photos for infants and young children.

Kosovo applies the full adult ruleset from age six. Younger applicants receive limited relaxations.

Infants (under 12 months)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora relaxes the expression and pose rules for babies under one year, but the infant must still appear alone in the frame.

  • ExpressionA neutral expression and closed mouth are not required. Eyes do not need to be fully open.
  • Head positionSmall deviations in head angle are tolerated, although the face should still be oriented toward the camera.
  • Lying-down photoInfants may be photographed lying flat on a plain white or light grey sheet when they cannot sit upright unsupported.
  • No supporting people or objectsHands, arms, parents, car seats, cushions, toys, and pacifiers must not be visible in the frame.
COUNTRY NOTES

Other things to know.

A few details about Kosovo’s visa channels are worth flagging before you submit.

One-month recency rule

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora states the photo must be no older than one month. This is stricter than the typical six-month standard used by other authorities, so retake the photo if it predates your application by more than four weeks.

Two prints for embassy filing

Walk-in and mail-in applications at Kosovo embassies and consulates require two identical printed copies of the photo. The eVisa portal at e-visa.rks-gov.net accepts a single digital upload instead.

No global VAC operator

Kosovo does not route visa intake through VFS Global, TLS Contact, or BLS. Applications go directly to a Kosovo embassy or consulate, or through the official eVisa portal.

PRINT QUALITY

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.

When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.

  • Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
  • Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
  • Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
  • Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
