Uzbekistan visa photos and the MFA standard
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan sets a single photo standard for every visa category that requires a picture, from tourist e-visas to business, student, work, and diplomatic sticker visas. The print measures 35 by 45 millimetres on a plain white background, and the MFA incorporates ICAO Doc 9303 by reference for the underlying biometric framing.
There is no third-party visa application centre in the Uzbek chain. Tourist applicants upload their photo directly through the e-visa portal at e-visa.gov.uz, while sticker-visa applicants upload through visa.mfa.uz to generate a barcoded PDF and then attach two physical 35 by 45 millimetre prints to that form for embassy submission. The same image must satisfy both the automated validator and the consular officer reviewing the printed file.
Enforcement is strict. The MFA validator rejects images that fall outside ICAO tolerances on pose, expression, or background uniformity, and a failed photo stops the application before any consular review begins. A rejection means resubmitting the photo and, for sticker visas, reprinting the entire barcoded form.
What the Uzbekistan MFA expects in your visa photo
Uzbekistan incorporates ICAO Doc 9303 by reference and the e-visa validator enforces it strictly. Focus on these subject-side rules and we will handle the rest.
Expression & pose
- Neutral expressionKeep a neutral expression with the mouth closed and no teeth showing. The e-visa portal validator rejects smiles and other non-neutral expressions even when older embassy boilerplate has suggested smiling is acceptable.
- Eyes open and forwardBoth eyes must be fully open, looking straight at the camera, with no squinting and nothing obscuring them.
- Head straightFace the camera squarely. The head must not be tilted or rotated, and the validator flags even minor head tilt as non-compliant.
- Shoulders visibleHead and upper shoulders should be in frame, with the shoulders level and the face centred.
Eyewear & lenses
- EyeglassesClear prescription glasses are permitted only if the lenses are untinted, the frames do not cover any part of the eyes, and there is no glare on the lenses. Applicants are safest removing glasses entirely, since the validator routinely rejects photos with any reflection.
- Tinted and sunglassesTinted lenses, sunglasses, and transition lenses are not allowed.
Hair & face
- Hair off the faceHair must not cover the eyes, eyebrows, or the outline of the face. A fringe that sits above the eyebrows is acceptable.
- Full face visibleThe entire face from chin to forehead must be clearly visible and free of obstructions.
Headwear
- Religious or medical onlyHats and head coverings are prohibited unless worn for religious or medical reasons. When worn for those reasons, the covering must not obscure any facial feature from the chin to the top of the forehead and must not cast shadows on the face.
Jewelry & cosmetics
- Jewelry in moderationModest jewelry is acceptable provided it does not obscure facial features or create reflections.
- Natural cosmeticsEveryday makeup is allowed as long as it does not alter the applicant’s appearance or mask permanent features.
Clothing
- Everyday clothingWear ordinary street clothes. Uniforms are not accepted unless worn as religious dress.
- Avoid white topsWhite and very light tops blend into the required white background and should be avoided.
Photo quality
- No red-eyeRed-eye is not accepted. The pupils must appear natural.
- No motion blurThe subject must hold still during capture. Motion blur on the face will trigger rejection.
- Recent photoThe photograph must have been taken within the last six months and must reflect the applicant’s current appearance.
Dimensions, resolution & background.
Head position & camera distance.
- Head height, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must be between 33 mm and 36 mm (roughly 73–80% of the photo height).
- Eyes must sit between 21 mm and 25 mm from the bottom of the photo.
- The head must be centered horizontally in the frame with a small symmetrical margin on each side.
- Both shoulders must be square to the camera and visible. Three-quarter angles or rotated torsos are not accepted.
- The full face from chin to crown must be inside the frame with proper top margin.
How recent the photo must be.
Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.
You need a new photo if you’ve had…
- Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
- A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
- Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
- A gender transition that has changed your appearance
You do not need a new photo just because of…
- A new hair color
- Growing or removing a beard or moustache
- Ordinary, minor aging
- A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
Other things to know.
A few Uzbekistan-specific quirks worth knowing before you submit.
No VAC channel
Uzbekistan does not use VFS Global, TLScontact, BLS, or any other visa application centre for its own visas. Applications go directly through e-visa.gov.uz, visa.mfa.uz, or an Uzbek embassy or consulate.
Dual submission for sticker visas
Sticker-visa applicants must upload the photo to visa.mfa.uz to generate a barcoded PDF form, then affix a physical 35x45 mm print inside the designated box on that printed form. Two prints are submitted, glued to the form. Staples and paper clips are not accepted.
Strict automated validator
The e-visa.gov.uz portal runs an automated ICAO compliance check on every upload, and it rejects on subtle issues that a human reviewer might overlook. Getting the subject-side rules right the first time avoids days of back-and-forth resubmissions.
No infant relaxation
Uzbekistan publishes no age-specific photo rules and the e-visa validator does not relax its criteria for infants or young children. The same neutral, eyes-open, forward-facing standard applies to every applicant who needs a visa.

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.
When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.
- Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
- Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
- Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
- Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
