GENERAL INFORMATION

Uganda visa photos and the DCIC e-Visa portal

Uganda’s visa photo standard is set by the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC) at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The published rule calls for a recent passport-size photograph of the applicant on a plain white or off-white background, with the face fully visible and free of shadows. The same specification applies uniformly across Tourist, East Africa Tourist, Multiple Entry, Transit, Student, Work, and Dependant categories.

Submission runs entirely through the official e-Visa portal at visas.immigration.go.ug. Uganda does not use a visa application centre operator, and ordinary categories are not accepted by embassy walk-in or by mail. The portal enforces a hard upload ceiling of 250 KB per file and accepts JPEG, PNG, BMP, or PDF, with JPEG or PNG recommended for the photo field.

A non-compliant photo will block approval at the DCIC review stage, and oversized files silently fail to upload, which is the most frequent technical rejection on the portal. On arrival at Entebbe Airport or a land border, immigration officers capture a fresh biometric photograph and fingerprints before printing the visa sticker, so the portal photo must be a true and current likeness of the traveller who will present at the gate.

REQUIREMENTS

Uganda visa photo requirements set by the DCIC

The Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control publishes a minimal rule set centered on a recent, true-likeness photograph. The points below cover what the subject must get right.

Expression & pose

  • Facing the cameraThe applicant must face the camera squarely with the head upright and not tilted or rotated. Both edges of the face should be visible.
  • Neutral expressionA neutral expression with the mouth closed is the safe default accepted by DCIC. Eyes must be open and looking directly at the camera.
  • True likenessThe photograph must be a true likeness of the applicant. The face captured on arrival by the immigration officer is compared against the portal photo.

Eyewear & lenses

  • Tinted lensesTinted lenses, sunglasses, and any eyewear that obscures the eyes are not accepted. The eyes must be fully visible.
  • Clear prescription glassesClear prescription glasses are tolerated provided there is no glare on the lenses and the frames do not cover any part of the eyes.

Headwear

  • General ruleHeadwear is not permitted for ordinary applicants.
  • Religious head coveringsReligious head coverings are accepted by DCIC provided the face is fully visible from the chin to the forehead and the covering does not cast shadows across the face.

Hair & face

  • Hair away from the eyesHair must not fall across the eyes or obscure the edges of the face. Both eyes and the outline of the face must be clearly visible.
  • No heavy shadowsBrims, headwear, or hairstyles that cast heavy shadows across the face will cause rejection at biometric capture or approval.

Clothing & accessories

  • Everyday clothingOrdinary civilian clothing is expected. Uniforms and camouflage patterns are not appropriate for a visa photograph.
  • AccessoriesLarge accessories that obscure the face or hairline should be removed. Modest everyday jewelry is acceptable.

RECENCY

How recent the photo must be.

Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.

You need a new photo if you’ve had…

  • Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
  • A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
  • Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
  • A gender transition that has changed your appearance

You do not need a new photo just because of…

  • A new hair color
  • Growing or removing a beard or moustache
  • Ordinary, minor aging
  • A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
COUNTRY NOTES

Other things to know.

A few operational details set Uganda apart from visas processed through agencies or embassy counters.

E-visa portal only

The DCIC e-Visa portal at visas.immigration.go.ug is the sole submission channel for ordinary visa categories. Uganda does not use VFS Global, BLS, or TLScontact, and embassies redirect ordinary applicants to the portal.

On-arrival biometric capture

After approval, a fresh webcam photo and fingerprints are taken at Entebbe Airport or the land border before the visa sticker is printed. The photo uploaded to the portal is used only to approve the application.

Uniform across categories

The same photo rule applies to Tourist, East Africa Tourist, Multiple Entry, Transit, Student, Work, and Dependant categories. There is no category-specific variant on the portal.

Recency

DCIC requires a recent passport-size photograph. Embassy guidance interprets this as taken within the last six months.

PRINT QUALITY

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.

When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.

  • Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
  • Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
  • Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
  • Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
