Turkmenistan visa photos for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Turkmenistan visa photos are governed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and processed by the State Migration Service. The application form distributed by Turkmen missions carries a 30×40 mm photo box, and that CIS-format print is the standard accepted across the embassy network. The photo is glued (not stapled) to the form and submitted alongside the State Migration Service-certified Letter of Invitation that anchors most visa categories.
There is no third-party visa application centre handling Turkmen intake, and no live e-visa portal for foreign applicants. Applications run through the embassy or consulate directly, by walk-in or mail, or are collected on arrival at Ashgabat International Airport with a pre-approved invitation code. Certain missions accept a local print variant: 2×2 inches in Washington DC and 35×45 mm in London and other European posts. The variant should match the embassy that will process the file.
Consular officers compare the photo against the published rules before the visa sticker is produced. A print that fails on background, expression, glasses, or recency is set aside and the application is returned for resubmission, which delays issuance and any onward travel built around it.
What the State Migration Service expects in a Turkmenistan visa photo
The State Migration Service of Turkmenistan and the MFA enforce a conservative, CIS-style portrait. The rules below cover what the applicant must present in front of the camera.
Expression & pose
- Neutral expressionKeep the mouth closed and the face relaxed. Smiling and visible teeth are not accepted by Turkmen consular officers.
- Eyes open and forwardBoth eyes must be fully open and looking straight into the lens. No squinting and no looking away from the camera.
- Head square to cameraFace the camera directly with the head level and shoulders squared. Tilting, turning, or angling the head will cause the photo to be rejected.
Eyewear & lenses
- Sunglasses and tintsSunglasses and tinted lenses are prohibited. Coloured or photochromic lenses that darken the eyes are not accepted.
- Prescription glassesClear prescription glasses are tolerated only if there is no glare on the lenses and the frames do not obscure the eyes. Removing glasses is the safer option and is the practice recommended by the Turkmen Embassy in Washington.
Hair & face visibility
- Full face visibleThe face must be fully visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead. Hair falling across the eyes, brows, or jawline must be moved aside.
Headwear
- No hats or capsHeadwear is not permitted for general applicants. Hats, caps, hoods, and decorative head coverings must be removed before the photo is taken.
- Religious or medical head coveringsHead coverings worn daily for religious or medical reasons are accepted, provided the full facial features from chin to forehead remain visible and unobstructed.
Photo quality
- No shadows on the faceThe face must be evenly lit with no shadows cast by hair, hats, or harsh side lighting. Shadows around the eyes, nose, or jaw are grounds for rejection.
- Natural skin tonesSkin colour must appear natural. Red-eye is not accepted and the photo must reflect the applicant’s current appearance without digital alteration.
Recency
- Taken within 6 monthsThe photo must be no more than six months old at the time of application. A fresh photo is also required after any significant change in appearance.
Dimensions, resolution & background.
Head position & camera distance.
- Head height, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must be between 33 mm and 37 mm (roughly 55–61% of the photo height).
- Eyes must sit between 28 mm and 34 mm from the bottom of the photo.
- The head must be centered horizontally in the frame with a small symmetrical margin on each side.
- Both shoulders must be square to the camera and visible. Three-quarter angles or rotated torsos are not accepted.
- The full face from chin to crown must be inside the frame with proper top margin.
How recent the photo must be.
Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.
You need a new photo if you’ve had…
- Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
- A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
- Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
- A gender transition that has changed your appearance
You do not need a new photo just because of…
- A new hair color
- Growing or removing a beard or moustache
- Ordinary, minor aging
- A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
Other things to know.
A handful of Turkmenistan-specific procedural quirks are worth knowing before you submit.
No e-visa portal yet
Turkmenistan does not operate a working e-visa platform for foreign applicants. The April 2025 Migration Law amendments created the legal basis, but the system was not live as of 2026, so every application still routes through an embassy, consulate, or border post.
No VFS or BLS intake
The State Migration Service does not use third-party visa application centres. Applications go directly to a Turkmen embassy or consulate, by walk-in or by post depending on the mission.
Embassy-specific size variants
The MFA application form carries a 3x4 cm photo box, but local missions accept their own conventions in practice. The Washington DC embassy uses 2x2 in (51x51 mm) and the London and European embassies accept 35x45 mm. Match the variant to the embassy where you are filing.
Glue the photo, do not staple
The print must be glued to the paper application form. Stapling, taping, or paper-clipping the photo causes the application to be returned. If you are collecting a visa on arrival at Ashgabat airport with a pre-approved Letter of Invitation, carry two extra prints with you, as there is no photo booth before immigration.

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.
When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.
- Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
- Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
- Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
- Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
