GENERAL INFORMATION

Eswatini visa photos and the Ministry of Home Affairs

Visa photos for the Kingdom of Eswatini are reviewed by the Department of Immigration within the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Ministry’s application forms simply ask for two identical passport-size colour prints, and the working dimensions are set by the mission that receives the file. Americas posts, led by the Embassy of Eswatini in Washington, D.C., expect 2×2 in (51×51 mm) prints, while the UK High Commission, the European and African missions, and the Mbabane headquarters apply the regional 35×45 mm format.

Every visa category, including tourist, business, transit, study, volunteer, intern and employment, uses the same photo specification, and two identical copies are required with each application. There is no e-visa portal or VFS intake for inbound Eswatini visas, so the prints must be handed in or couriered to the consulate, embassy or Ministry counter. A travel agent, immigration practitioner or courier service may file on the applicant’s behalf, but the physical prints still have to meet the consular standard.

Consular officers reject submissions where the photograph is not recent, not on plain white, or not a faithful likeness of the applicant. A non-compliant photo means the application is handed back at the counter or returned by post, pushing the visa decision past the traveller’s intended departure date.

REQUIREMENTS

What the Eswatini Ministry of Home Affairs expects in your visa photo

The Department of Immigration enforces a standard consular look. Get the subject right and the rest is handled when we produce your prints.

Expression & pose

  • Neutral expressionHold a relaxed, neutral expression with the mouth closed. Consular staff at Eswatini missions reject photos with smiles, frowns, or other exaggerated expressions.
  • Face the camera squarelyKeep the head straight and look directly at the lens. The full face must be visible from the front with shoulders level.
  • Eyes open and visibleBoth eyes must be open and clearly visible. Avoid squinting or half-closed eyes.

Eyewear & lenses

  • Tinted lenses and sunglassesSunglasses and any tinted or coloured lenses are not accepted. The eyes must read as natural in the final photo.
  • Clear prescription glassesClear glasses are tolerated only when the frames do not cover any part of the eyes and the lenses produce no glare. Removing glasses for the photo is the safer option.

Hair

  • Keep hair off the eyesHair, fringes, and loose strands must not fall across the eyes or obscure the eyebrows. Pin or tuck longer styles back from the face.
  • Facial features visibleThe full face from chin to forehead must remain visible. Hair may sit naturally around the sides of the face.

Headwear

  • No general headwearHats, caps, and decorative head coverings are not permitted in Eswatini visa photos.
  • Religious or medical exceptionHead coverings worn daily for religious or medical reasons are accepted, provided nothing between the chin and the top of the forehead is obscured.

Clothing & accessories

  • Everyday clothingOrdinary day clothing is accepted. Uniforms and clothing that resembles a uniform should be avoided.
  • Jewellery and piercingsModest jewellery and piercings are tolerated as long as nothing casts shadows on the face or covers facial features.

Photo quality

  • True likenessThe photo must be a true and current representation of the applicant. The Department of Immigration treats the photograph as the sole biometric identifier on the application.
  • No red-eyeRed-eye is grounds for rejection. The eyes must show natural colour.
  • Recent photoThe photograph must have been taken within the last six months so that it reflects the applicant’s current appearance.

RECENCY

How recent the photo must be.

Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.

You need a new photo if you’ve had…

  • Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
  • A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
  • Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
  • A gender transition that has changed your appearance

You do not need a new photo just because of…

  • A new hair color
  • Growing or removing a beard or moustache
  • Ordinary, minor aging
  • A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
COUNTRY NOTES

Other things to know.

A few quirks of the Eswatini visa channel are worth knowing before you submit.

Print size depends on the mission

The Ministry of Home Affairs only specifies ’two passport size photos’ and leaves the exact dimensions to each mission. Applications filed at the Embassy in Washington, D.C. and other Americas missions use 2x2 in (51x51 mm). Applications filed at the UK High Commission, European and African missions, and the Mbabane headquarters use 35x45 mm.

No e-visa channel

Eswatini operates no online visa portal and no VFS or BLS intake. Every application is submitted on paper, either in person, by courier, or through a travel agent or immigration practitioner acting on the applicant’s behalf.

Two identical prints

Every visa category, from tourist and business through to study and employment, requires two identical colour prints. One photo is not enough and consular staff will return incomplete applications.

Keep prints pristine

Prints must arrive uncreased and unmarked. Do not staple or clip through the face, and do not write on the front of the photograph.

PRINT QUALITY

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.

When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.

  • Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
  • Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
  • Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
  • Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
