GENERAL INFORMATION

Slovakia visa photos follow the MZV SR and MINV SR standard

Slovakia sets its visa photo rules through the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MZV SR) and the Ministry of Interior (MINV SR). The same biometric standard applies to Schengen Type A airport transit visas, Schengen Type C short-stay visas, and National Type D long-stay visas. Slovakia is unusual among Schengen states in publishing a smaller-than-typical print size, and posts that strictly follow the central rule will not always accept a generic Schengen print brought from elsewhere.

There is no general Slovak e-visa channel for photo upload. The EZOV portal at ezov.mzv.sk handles form data only, so applicants must lodge a physical print in person at a Slovak embassy or consulate, a VFS Global visa application centre, or a BLS International centre, depending on jurisdiction. A live digital capture is taken at the counter for the Schengen Visa Information System in addition to the supplied print, and the print itself must be clipped or glued to the form rather than stapled.

Front-line intake staff at VFS and BLS centres apply the photo checklist strictly. A print that fails on background colour, head position, expression, eyewear, or headwear is refused at the counter, which means a return trip, a new appointment, and a delayed decision on the application.

REQUIREMENTS

What the MZV SR requires in your Slovak visa photo

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and the Ministry of Interior apply ICAO 9303 standards to every Schengen Type C and National Type D application. The rules below describe how you must appear in the frame.

Expression & pose

  • Neutral expressionKeep a neutral face with the mouth closed. No smiling, frowning, or raised eyebrows, and no visible teeth.
  • Eyes open and forwardBoth eyes must be open and looking straight at the camera. Squinting is not accepted.
  • Head straightFace the camera squarely with the head upright. Do not tilt or turn the head; both edges of the face must be equally visible.
  • Shoulders includedThe top of the shoulders should appear in the frame so the head sits naturally above the body.

Eyewear & lenses

  • EyeglassesEyeglasses are not permitted in Slovak visa photos. Remove all glasses before the photo is taken, including clear-lens frames.
  • Tinted or coloured lensesSunglasses, tinted lenses, and coloured contact lenses are not accepted. The natural colour of the eyes must be visible.

Hair & facial hair

  • Hair off the faceHair must not cover the eyes or eyebrows and must not cast shadows across the face.
  • Forehead visibleBangs or fringes that obscure the forehead are not permitted. The full forehead and hairline must be clearly visible.
  • Facial hairBeards and moustaches are acceptable provided they reflect your current everyday appearance and do not obscure facial features.

Headwear

  • General ruleHats, caps, and other head coverings are not permitted.
  • Religious or medical exceptionHead coverings worn daily for religious or medical reasons are allowed, but the full face from chin to forehead must remain visible and both contours of the face must be clearly shown without shadow.

Jewelry & accessories

  • Visible featuresJewelry is permitted only if it does not obscure any part of the face or cause glare on the skin.
  • Face piercingsRemoving large or reflective face piercings is advisable so that facial features remain unambiguous to the visa officer reviewing the dossier.

Cosmetics

  • Natural appearanceLight, everyday makeup is acceptable. Heavy cosmetics that alter or mask facial features are not permitted, as the photo must reflect your current natural appearance.

Clothing

  • Everyday clothingWear ordinary civilian clothing that contrasts with a white background. White or very pale tops should be avoided.
  • UniformsUniforms and clothing resembling official uniforms are discouraged under standard Schengen practice.

Photo recency

  • Six month ruleThe photo must have been taken within the last six months and must represent your current appearance. A small number of Slovak posts (notably BLS Ireland) require a photo no older than three months.
  • Change in appearanceA significant change in appearance, such as substantial weight change, facial surgery, or the addition or removal of facial hair, requires a new photo even within the six month window.

  • Eyes must sit between 18 mm and 21 mm from the bottom of the photo.

  • Both shoulders must be square to the camera and visible. Three-quarter angles or rotated torsos are not accepted.
  • The full face from chin to crown must be inside the frame with proper top margin.
RECENCY

How recent the photo must be.

Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.

You need a new photo if you’ve had…

  • Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
  • A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
  • Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
  • A gender transition that has changed your appearance

You do not need a new photo just because of…

  • A new hair color
  • Growing or removing a beard or moustache
  • Ordinary, minor aging
  • A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
INFANTS & CHILDREN

Photos for infants and young children.

Slovak law does not publish formal age tiers, but the EU and ICAO guidance that Slovakia applies allows narrow accommodations for the youngest applicants.

Infants (under 12 months)

Schengen practice relaxes the strictest pose and expression rules for babies under one year, while every other framing and background rule still applies.

  • ExpressionA perfectly neutral expression is not required. The mouth does not need to be fully closed.
  • EyesEyes may be closed if the infant cannot reliably hold them open at the moment of capture.
  • Head positionMinor deviations from a perfectly straight, forward-facing pose are tolerated.
  • Alone in frameThe infant must appear alone. Supporting hands, arms, toys, dummies, blankets, and other people must not be visible anywhere in the photo.
COUNTRY NOTES

Other things to know.

A few features of the Slovak visa channel catch applicants off guard even when the photo itself is compliant.

Smaller than standard Schengen size

Slovakia is one of the few Schengen states to mandate a 30 by 35 mm print rather than the common 35 by 45 mm Schengen format. A generic Schengen photo prepared for another member state may be refused at a Slovak post that applies the central rule rigidly.

No central photo upload

The EZOV electronic application portal accepts form data only and does not accept a photo upload. The printed photo must be physically lodged with the printed form at an embassy or visa application centre. A small number of BLS country portals (Indonesia, Egypt) additionally ask for a low-resolution pre-upload that supplements, but does not replace, the printed copy.

Bring two identical prints

The number of prints required varies between one and two depending on the visa category and the jurisdiction. Bringing two identical compliant prints covers every published Slovak checklist and avoids a return trip to the VAC.

Do not staple the print

VFS Global and BLS International instructions for Slovakia prohibit stapling the photo to the application form. The print must be attached with glue or a paper clip as directed by the intake clerk so the image surface is not damaged.

PRINT QUALITY

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.

When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.

  • Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
  • Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
  • Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
  • Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
