GENERAL INFORMATION

Serbia visa photos under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs standard

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia (Ministarstvo spoljnih poslova) sets a single photo standard that applies across every visa category, including airport transit (Visa A), short-stay (Visa C), and long-stay (Visa D). The same 35×45 mm portrait is used whether the application is filed digitally or on paper, and Serbia’s policy is fully harmonised with the ICAO and Schengen biometric standard despite Serbia not being a Schengen member.

Applicants submit through three channels, and the photo requirement is identical for all of them. Most missions accept walk-in or mail-in dossiers directly at the embassy or consulate, VFS Global operates Serbian Visa Application Centres in select high-volume markets, and since April 2025 the welcometoserbia.gov.rs and econsulate.gov.rs portals accept digital uploads for e-Visa C and e-Visa D applications from designated nationalities. On-site biometric capture, where it occurs, does not replace the photo in the application file.

Serbian consular officers and VFS intake staff enforce the spec strictly. A photo that fails on framing, background, expression, or recency is returned with the dossier, and the application cannot move forward until a compliant replacement is supplied. Photos older than six months are not accepted, and a fresh photo is required after any significant change in appearance.

REQUIREMENTS

What the Serbian visa photo must show

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia (MFA) follows the ICAO/Schengen-harmonised standard. The rules below cover what the applicant must look like in the final photo.

Expression & pose

  • Neutral expressionThe applicant must hold a neutral expression with the mouth closed and no visible teeth. Smiling, frowning, or raised eyebrows are not accepted.
  • Full frontal alignmentThe head must face the camera squarely, with both sides of the face equally visible. No tilt, turn, or profile angle is permitted.
  • Eyes open and visibleBoth eyes must be fully open and looking at the camera. Hair must not fall across the eyes.

Eyewear & lenses

  • Prescription glassesClear prescription glasses are permitted only if the eyes remain fully visible, the frames do not cover any part of the eyes, and the lenses produce no glare or reflection.
  • Tinted and sunglassesSunglasses and any tinted or coloured lenses are prohibited, including light cosmetic tints.

Hair & face

  • Hair off the faceHair must be arranged so that the full outline of the face, the eyes, and the eyebrows remain visible.
  • EarsEars do not have to be visible, but hair should not cast shadows across the face.

Headwear

  • General ruleHats and head coverings are not permitted in Serbian visa photos.
  • Religious, cultural, or medical exceptionHead coverings worn daily for religious, cultural, or medical reasons are accepted only if the full face from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead remains clearly visible and the covering casts no shadow on the face.

Jewelry & cosmetics

  • Jewelry and piercingsSmall jewelry and piercings are permitted if they do not obscure facial features or produce reflections.
  • CosmeticsEveryday makeup is acceptable provided it does not alter the natural appearance of the face or cause glare on the skin.

Clothing

Photo quality

  • True likenessThe photo must be a true and current representation of the applicant. Skin smoothing, blemish removal, and other retouching that alters the applicant’s appearance are not accepted.

RECENCY

How recent the photo must be.

Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.

You need a new photo if you’ve had…

  • Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
  • A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
  • Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
  • A gender transition that has changed your appearance

You do not need a new photo just because of…

  • A new hair color
  • Growing or removing a beard or moustache
  • Ordinary, minor aging
  • A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
INFANTS & CHILDREN

Photos for infants and young children.

The MFA does not publish a separate minors’ standard, but Visa Application Centres operating on behalf of Serbia apply the ICAO infant allowance for the youngest applicants.

Infants (under 1 year)

Newborns and infants who cannot sit upright unsupported are given relaxed expression and pose tolerances.

  • ExpressionThe neutral-expression rule is relaxed. Open eyes are preferred, but closed eyes are tolerated for newborns.
  • PositionThe infant may be photographed lying flat on a plain white sheet, or seated in a car seat covered with white cloth, photographed from directly above.
  • No visible supportNo hands, arms, straps, toys, or other supports may appear anywhere in the frame.
COUNTRY NOTES

Other things to know.

A few practical points are specific to how Serbia accepts visa photos.

Bring two prints to a VAC

The MFA page implies one photo, but VFS Global checklists for Serbian visas require two identical prints. For any walk-in embassy or VFS Global appointment, prepare two physical copies to cover both standards.

e-Visa channel since April 2025

Serbia launched Digital Travel Authorizations for short-stay Visa C applicants from 46 nationalities through welcometoserbia.gov.rs in April 2025. The photo specification is identical to the print standard; only the submission channel changed.

Schengen photo accepted

Serbia is not a Schengen member, but its visa photo policy is fully harmonised with the Schengen standard. A photo that meets Schengen requirements will be accepted for a Serbian visa application.

Pristine print condition

Submitted prints must be free of creases, ink marks, scratches, and staple holes. Photos trimmed to the wrong size or with white borders are returned with the application.

PRINT QUALITY

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.

When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.

  • Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
  • Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
  • Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
  • Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
