Oman visa photos and the Royal Oman Police standard
Oman’s visa photo rules are set by the Royal Oman Police (ROP), Directorate General of Passports and Residence. The same compositional standard applies across every visa category, from unsponsored and sponsored tourist eVisas to Work, Family Joining, Student, and Investor visas. ROP publishes the binding requirements in its eVisa document attachment guidelines, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs directs applicants back to those same ROP systems for entry visas.
There is no third-party visa application centre operating on inbound Oman visas. Tourist, business, GCC-resident, and express applications go through the ROP eVisa portal at evisa.rop.gov.om, where a digital photo must be uploaded under a strict 512 KB ceiling. Residency-track applications (Work, Family Joining, Student, Investor) are filed on paper by an Omani sponsor at a ROP visa office, or at an Omani embassy abroad, and require two identical printed photographs at 40×60 mm.
ROP officers review every photo against the published rules, and a submission that misses the standard is rejected outright. For paper files this means the application is returned to the sponsor; for the eVisa portal it means the upload is refused or the visa decision is delayed. Meeting the ROP specification on the first attempt is the only reliable way through.
What the Royal Oman Police expect in a visa photo
The Royal Oman Police (ROP) Directorate General of Passports and Residence sets a tight standard for the subject in every visa photo. Match these rules to clear the eVisa portal and embassy review.

- Eyes open and visibleBoth eyes must be fully open and looking directly at the camera. Hair, frames, or shadows crossing the eyes will trigger rejection.

Dimensions, resolution & background.
Head position & camera distance.
- Head height, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must be between 36 mm and 40 mm (roughly 60–66% of the photo height).
- Eyes must sit between 30 mm and 36 mm from the bottom of the photo.
- The head must be centered horizontally in the frame with a small symmetrical margin on each side.
- Both shoulders must be square to the camera and visible. Three-quarter angles or rotated torsos are not accepted.

How recent the photo must be.
Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.
You need a new photo if you’ve had…
- Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
- A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
- Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
- A gender transition that has changed your appearance
You do not need a new photo just because of…
- A new hair color
- Growing or removing a beard or moustache
- Ordinary, minor aging
- A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
Other things to know.
A few Oman-specific quirks are worth knowing before you submit.
ROP channels only
No third-party visa application centre (VFS, BLS, TLS) processes inbound Oman visas. Applications go through the ROP eVisa portal at evisa.rop.gov.om or directly to an Omani embassy or consulate. Long-stay categories handled by a sponsor inside Oman are filed at ROP visa offices.
Two prints for residency visas
Work, Family Joining, Resident, Student, and Investor visa packages require two identical 40 by 60 mm printed photographs submitted with the paper application, per the ROP Visa Types pages.
512 KB upload ceiling
The ROP eVisa portal enforces a strict 512 KB maximum file size per photo. Uploads above this limit are rejected at submission.
Strict edge enforcement
ROP reviewers reject photos showing edge artefacts or other signs of heavy alteration around the subject. A clean, natural capture of the face and shoulders is essential.

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.
When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.
- Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
- Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
- Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
- Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
