Mauritius visa photo rules from the Passport and Immigration Office
The Passport and Immigration Office (PIO), operating under the Prime Minister’s Office of Mauritius, sets the photo standard used for every Mauritian visa category. The same specification covers tourist, business, social, student, medical, transit, conference, and long-stay Premium Visa applications. The PIO does not publish a separate visa-only photo rule, so the domestic passport-size standard of 35 by 45 mm, taken within the last six months, is what consular officers apply.
Mauritius does not use VFS Global, BLS, TLS, or any other visa application centre network. Standard short-stay applications are filed directly with a Mauritian diplomatic mission, an Air Mauritius office where no mission exists, or with the PIO in Port Louis through a local sponsor, and each requires two identical printed photos. The long-stay Premium Visa is the only channel that accepts a digital upload, submitted through the Economic Development Board’s National E-Licensing System portal.
PIO officers enforce the spec strictly. Photos that fall outside the published face-coverage range, show a non-neutral expression, include tinted lenses or non-religious headwear, or have been trimmed to size are returned with the application, which delays issuance and can require resubmission before the file is reopened.
What the Passport and Immigration Office expects in your visa photo
The Passport and Immigration Office (PIO) applies the Mauritian passport photo standard to visa applications. The rules below govern how the subject must appear in the final image.
Expression & pose
- Neutral expressionThe applicant must hold a neutral expression with the mouth closed and no visible teeth. Smiling, frowning, or other expressions are not accepted by the PIO.
- Eyes open and visibleBoth eyes must be open and looking directly at the camera. Hair must not fall across the eyes.
- Facing the cameraThe face must point squarely forward with both edges of the face visible. The head must not be tilted or turned.
Eyewear & lenses
- Sunglasses and tinted lensesSunglasses and tinted or dark glasses are prohibited. The PIO requires a clear view of the eyes.
- Prescription glassesClear prescription glasses are permitted only if the frames do not cover any part of the eyes and there is no glare on the lenses. The PIO recommends removing glasses where possible.
Hair & face visibility
- Hair across the faceHair must not cover the eyes or obscure the outline of the face. The full face from chin to forehead must be visible.
- Face coveringsNothing may cover the outline of the eyes, nose, or mouth. Scarves, masks, and similar items that obstruct facial features are not accepted.
Headwear
- Religious or medical headwearHead coverings are prohibited except where worn for religious or medical reasons. When worn for a permitted reason, the full face from chin to forehead must remain visible and the headwear must not cast shadows across the face.
Photo quality (subject-side)
- Shadows on the faceShadows across the face, including those cast by headwear or hair, will cause the photo to be rejected by the PIO.
- Red-eyeRed-eye is not accepted. The eyes must appear in their natural colour.
- True likenessThe photo must be a true and current likeness of the applicant, taken within the last six months. Retouching of facial features is not permitted.
Dimensions, resolution & background.
Head position & camera distance.
- Head height, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must be between 25 mm and 34 mm (roughly 56–76% of the photo height).
- Eyes must sit between 24 mm and 30 mm from the bottom of the photo.
- The head must be centered horizontally in the frame with a small symmetrical margin on each side.
- Both shoulders must be square to the camera and visible. Three-quarter angles or rotated torsos are not accepted.
- The full face from chin to crown must be inside the frame with proper top margin.
How recent the photo must be.
Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.
You need a new photo if you’ve had…
- Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
- A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
- Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
- A gender transition that has changed your appearance
You do not need a new photo just because of…
- A new hair color
- Growing or removing a beard or moustache
- Ordinary, minor aging
- A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
Photos for infants and young children.
The PIO states that the standard rules apply to babies and young children, with practical concessions for what cannot be controlled at that age.
Infants (under 12 months)
Infants must appear alone in the frame against a light background. The same composition and visibility rules apply, although enforcement of expression and eye direction is relaxed in practice.
- Child alone in frameNo other people may appear in the photo. Adult hands supporting the child must not be visible.
- No toys or dummiesToys, pacifiers, dummies, and other objects must not appear in the photo.
- Eyes open where possiblePIO text requires both eyes open even for infants, although officers typically apply this more leniently for children under one year.
- Expression and head angleA strictly neutral expression and perfectly forward-facing pose are not required for infants. Minor variation is accepted.
Other things to know.
A few features of the Mauritian visa channel are worth flagging before you submit.
No VFS or BLS network
Mauritius does not use VFS Global, BLS, TLS, or any other visa application centre operator. Applications go directly to a Mauritian diplomatic mission, an Air Mauritius office where no mission exists, or the PIO in Port Louis via a local sponsor.
Two identical prints required
Standard short-stay visa applications require two identical printed photos submitted with the paper application. A single print is not sufficient.
Premium Visa uploads digitally
The long-stay Premium Visa is the only category submitted online, through the Economic Development Board’s NELS portal. The image is uploaded as a JPEG, PNG, or PDF up to 5 MB rather than printed.
US consulate size tolerance
Mauritian consulates in the United States often accept the US standard 2 by 2 inch (51 by 51 mm) photo at their discretion. The official PIO size of 35 by 45 mm remains the safer choice and is required for submissions handled in Mauritius.

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.
When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.
- Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
- Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
- Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
- Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
