GENERAL INFORMATION

Mongolia visa photos follow a single Immigration Agency standard

The Immigration Agency of Mongolia, working alongside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sets one photo standard that runs across every visa category. Tourist (K2), sports and cultural (K4), transit (K6), business, employment, student, family, and diplomatic visas all use the same 35 by 45 millimetre colour photograph, taken within the last six months and showing a clear, full-faced view of the applicant.

Submission channels split three ways. The evisa.mn portal handles digital uploads for short-stay categories, Mongolian embassies and consulates accept paper applications with one photo glued directly to the form, and VFS Global handles intake in a small number of markets such as South Africa where two identical prints are required. Whichever route applies, the photographic specification itself does not change.

Enforcement is strict on the points the applicant controls, namely expression, pose, eyewear, and the recency of the image. A photo that fails the published rules will be returned, and a paper application missing its photo or carrying an out-of-date one will not move forward until the file is corrected.

REQUIREMENTS

What the Immigration Agency of Mongolia expects in your visa photo

Mongolia uses one photo standard across every visa category. The rules below cover what you, the subject, need to get right before the shutter clicks.

Expression & pose

  • Neutral expressionKeep the face relaxed with the mouth closed and teeth hidden. The Immigration Agency of Mongolia requires a neutral expression with no smile, including a slight closed-mouth smile.
  • Eyes open and forwardBoth eyes must be fully open, clearly visible, and looking directly at the camera. Squinting or half-closed eyes will be rejected.
  • Full-faced framingFace the camera squarely with the head upright and shoulders level. Tilting or turning the head away from frontal alignment is not accepted.
  • Photo recencyThe photo must be taken within the last six months and must reflect your current appearance. An older image is grounds for refusal even if every other rule is met.

Eyewear & lenses

  • Prescription glassesClear prescription glasses are technically permitted provided the frames do not cover any part of the eyes and the lenses produce no glare, reflection, or tint. Real-world rejection rates are high, so removing glasses before the shot is strongly advised.
  • Sunglasses and tinted lensesSunglasses, transition lenses, and any tinted eyewear are prohibited. The natural color and shape of both eyes must be fully visible.

Hair & facial features

  • Hair off the faceHair must not cover the eyes, eyebrows, or the outline of the face. Bangs that fall across the forehead and obscure features are not accepted.
  • Ears visibilityVisa application centres operating on behalf of Mongolia, including VFS Global, expect both ears to be visible where hair length allows. Tucking hair behind the ears is the safest approach.

Headwear

  • No hats or capsHeadwear is prohibited for non-religious, non-medical reasons. Hats, caps, beanies, and headbands that cross the forehead must be removed.
  • Religious or medical head coveringsHead coverings worn daily for documented religious or medical reasons are permitted, provided the full face from the chin to the top of the forehead remains visible and the covering casts no shadow across the face.

Jewelry & accessories

  • Face-covering accessoriesAny accessory that obscures facial features, including large earrings, nose ornaments, or facial scarves, must be removed for the photo. Small, flat jewelry that does not interfere with the face outline is acceptable.

Clothing

  • Everyday clothingWear ordinary day clothing. Uniforms and clothing resembling official uniforms are not accepted.
  • Avoid white topsBecause the background must be pure white, clothing in white or very pale shades can blend into the backdrop and trigger rejection. Choose a darker or mid-tone top to keep the shoulders defined.

  • Eyes must sit between 19 mm and 23 mm from the bottom of the photo.
  • The head must be centered horizontally in the frame with a small symmetrical margin on each side.
  • Both shoulders must be square to the camera and visible. Three-quarter angles or rotated torsos are not accepted.
  • The full face from chin to crown must be inside the frame with proper top margin.
RECENCY

How recent the photo must be.

Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.

You need a new photo if you’ve had…

  • Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
  • A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
  • Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
  • A gender transition that has changed your appearance

You do not need a new photo just because of…

  • A new hair color
  • Growing or removing a beard or moustache
  • Ordinary, minor aging
  • A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
COUNTRY NOTES

Other things to know.

A few Mongolia-specific quirks worth knowing before you submit.

Channel decides copy count

Embassy and consulate paper applications require one photo glued to the application form. VFS Global intake centres operating for Mongolia in limited markets, such as South Africa, require two identical prints. Bring two copies to cover either channel.

US size trap

Mongolian missions do not accept the US 2 by 2 inch passport-photo size. Applicants ordering prints in the United States should specifically request the European or Schengen 35 by 45 mm size to avoid an automatic rejection at the consulate window.

Visa-free travellers skip the photo

Citizens of roughly 98 countries currently fall under Mongolia’s temporary visa-free regime for short tourist stays. If your nationality is covered for the dates you plan to travel, no visa application and no visa photo are required.

Visa on arrival still needs a print

Eligible nationalities collecting a visa on arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport or a designated land border must present one printed 35 by 45 mm photo at the counter. Immigration officers also capture fingerprints and a live photograph on site as a separate biometric check.

PRINT QUALITY

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.

When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.

  • Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
  • Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
  • Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
  • Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
