North Macedonia visa photos and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
North Macedonia’s visa photograph is governed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Министерство за надворешни работи), which sets the documentation list for every Type A airport transit, Type C short-stay, and Type D long-stay visa. The MFA codifies a compact rule: one colour photograph, 35 by 45 millimetres, taken against a white background, with the applicant’s face clearly visible. The same specification appears on the Invest North Macedonia consular pages and applies uniformly across visa categories.
Applications are filed in person at a Macedonian diplomatic-consular mission (DKP) abroad, with a printed photograph attached to the paper file. There is no outsourced visa application centre operator for inbound visas, and no national e-visa portal has been corroborated on the MFA’s published consular pages. Applicants supply their own print, and consular officers compare the submitted image against the MFA’s qualitative criteria at the counter.
A photograph that fails the MFA criteria leads to rejection of the package at intake or a request to resubmit, both of which delay the visa decision. Because the MFA specifies white (not the light grey accepted by some Schengen states) and enforces the 35 by 45 millimetre format strictly, legacy 2 by 2 inch prints and off-white backgrounds are not accepted. Bringing two or three identical copies of the compliant photo is standard practice as a safety margin.
What North Macedonia visa photos require
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs codifies only a handful of rules. Consular officers at Macedonian missions apply ICAO-style biometric expectations on top of them, so the subject-side requirements below reflect both.
Expression & pose
- Neutral expressionKeep a relaxed, neutral expression with the mouth closed. Avoid smiling broadly, frowning, or raised eyebrows.
- Eyes open and forwardBoth eyes must be open and looking straight at the camera. No squinting and no closed eyes.
- Head straightFace the camera directly with the head upright and shoulders square. Do not tilt or turn the head.
- Face clearly visibleThe MFA rule is that the applicant’s face must be clearly visible in the frame. Nothing should obscure the features from chin to forehead.
Eyewear & lenses
- EyeglassesMacedonian law does not formally prohibit prescription glasses, but tinted lenses, heavy frames, and reflections are incompatible with the clearly visible face requirement. Removing glasses is the safest option.
- Sunglasses and tintsSunglasses and tinted lenses are not acceptable. The eyes and irises must be plainly visible to consular staff.
Hair & facial hair
- Hair off the faceHair must not fall across the eyes or substantially obscure the eyebrows, cheeks, or jawline. Tuck long fringes aside.
- Facial hairBeards and moustaches are accepted provided they reflect the applicant’s everyday appearance and do not hide facial features.
Headwear
- General ruleHats, caps, and decorative head coverings are not worn for Macedonian visa photos.
- Religious or medical coveringsHead coverings worn daily for religious or medical reasons are accepted, provided the full face from chin to forehead remains visible and the covering casts no shadow on the face.
Jewelry & accessories
- Discreet pieces onlyAvoid large, reflective, or face-obstructing jewelry. Small studs and discreet pieces are acceptable as long as they do not interfere with the visibility of the face.
Cosmetics
- Natural appearanceWear only light, everyday makeup. Heavy cosmetics that alter the natural appearance of the face are discouraged.
Clothing
- Everyday attirePlain everyday clothing is appropriate. Uniforms are not worn for visa photos.
- Avoid white topsBecause the background is white, plain white shirts and tops can blend into the backdrop. Choose a colour that contrasts with the background.
Photo quality
- No heavy shadows on the faceThe face must be evenly visible with no harsh shadows across the cheeks, eyes, or forehead.
- No red-eyeRed-eye is not acceptable. Eyes must appear natural in colour.
- Truthful likenessThe photo must truthfully represent the applicant. Beauty filters, skin smoothing, and facial reshaping are not acceptable.
Dimensions, resolution & background.
Head position & camera distance.
- Head height, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must be between 33 mm and 36 mm (roughly 73–81% of the photo height).
- Eyes must sit between 21 mm and 25 mm from the bottom of the photo.
- The head must be centered horizontally in the frame with a small symmetrical margin on each side.
- Both shoulders must be square to the camera and visible. Three-quarter angles or rotated torsos are not accepted.
- The full face from chin to crown must be inside the frame with proper top margin.
How recent the photo must be.
Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.
You need a new photo if you’ve had…
- Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
- A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
- Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
- A gender transition that has changed your appearance
You do not need a new photo just because of…
- A new hair color
- Growing or removing a beard or moustache
- Ordinary, minor aging
- A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
Other things to know.
A few details about the North Macedonia visa channel are worth flagging before you apply.
In-person submission only
North Macedonia does not operate a corroborated national e-visa portal and does not outsource intake to VFS Global, TLScontact, or BLS. Applications and the printed photograph are submitted in person at a Macedonian diplomatic-consular mission (DKP) abroad.
Strictly white background
The MFA explicitly requires a white background, not the light grey accepted by most Schengen states. Grey, off-white, cream, and pale blue backdrops are not compliant.
Bring spare copies
The MFA documentation list requires one photograph, but consular staff routinely appreciate two or three identical copies. Carrying spares avoids a return trip if one print is damaged or rejected on the day.
Legacy 2×2 inch size is obsolete
Older commercial guides still list a 2×2 inch Macedonian visa photo. That size is out of date and non-compliant. The only current MFA standard is 35×45 mm.

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.
When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.
- Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
- Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
- Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
- Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
