GENERAL INFORMATION

Kazakhstan visa photos and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs standard

Kazakhstan visa photographs are governed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs Migration Service, under the joint 2016 order on invitations and visa issuance. The detailed biometric parameters are inherited from the egov.kz identity-document photo standard, which serves as the de facto technical template for every visa category from A-series diplomatic through B-series tourist and business to C-series work, study, and medical-treatment visas.

Submissions go directly to Kazakh missions or to the official Visa and Migration Portal at vmp.gov.kz. No VAC operator (VFS Global, BLS, TLScontact) handles inbound Kazakhstan visas, so applicants prepare their own photograph and either attach a print to the paper application or upload a digital file through the e-visa channel for eligible B1 to B3 business, B12 tourist, and C12 medical-treatment categories.

Consular posts enforce the spec strictly. A photo that misses the neutral expression, the head-size band, or the prescribed background is grounds for the application to be returned or refused, and a returned application means resubmission and renewed processing time. Following the MFA rule on the first attempt is the only reliable way to keep a visa file moving.

REQUIREMENTS

What the Kazakhstan visa photo must show

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs applies the egov.kz identity-document photo standard to visa applications. The subject-side rules below are the ones you control before the shutter clicks.

Expression & pose

  • Neutral expressionHold a neutral countenance with the mouth closed. No smiling, no visible teeth, and no exaggerated expression. Islamabad and Sydney consular notices state the rule plainly: no smiling.
  • Eyes open and visibleBoth eyes must be open, looking straight into the camera, and clearly visible. Eyes should not be narrowed or partially closed.
  • Head squared to cameraFace the camera directly. The egov.kz standard prohibits half-profile views and any tilt, bend, or rotation of the head.
  • Shoulders frontalHead and shoulders must be in a frontal position. The shoulder rule applies even where children’s rules relax other framing requirements.

Eyewear & lenses

  • Clear prescription glassesClear prescription glasses are permitted only if the eyes remain clearly visible, the lenses show no glare or reflection, and the frames do not obscure the eyes. Removing glasses is the safer choice when in doubt.
  • Sunglasses and tinted lensesSunglasses, tinted lenses, and coloured contact lenses are prohibited. The only exception is a medical eyeshade documented by a physician.

Hair & face

  • Hair away from eyesHair must not cover the eyes or significantly obscure the face. Bangs that fall onto the forehead and shadow the eyes are not accepted.
  • Full face visibleThe face must be fully visible from chin to forehead, with both ears framed in plain view of the camera and no hair crossing the eye line.

Headwear

  • Religious or medical onlyHeadwear is permitted only for religious reasons, with an implicit allowance for medical necessity. Everyday hats, caps, hoods, and headbands are not accepted.
  • Face must stay clearWhen religious or medical headwear is worn, it must not cast shadows on the face and the chin, cheeks, and forehead must remain fully visible.

Clothing

  • No uniformsUniforms are prohibited under the egov.kz identity-photo standard. Wear ordinary civilian clothing.
  • Everyday dressChoose plain everyday clothing that contrasts with a light background. Avoid reflective fabrics and clothing that crowds the neckline.

Jewelry & cosmetics

  • Unobstructed featuresJewelry must not obscure facial features or cause reflections. Large earrings, nose chains, and face piercings that catch the light should be removed.
  • Natural appearanceSkin tone must look natural. Heavy or reflective makeup that alters the natural complexion is not accepted.

Photo quality

  • Even illuminationLighting on the face must be even, with no lighter or darker regions and no harsh shadows across the cheeks, eye sockets, or neck.
  • No red-eyeRed-eye is not accepted. If a flash causes reflection in the pupils, retake the photo.
  • Recent photographThe photograph must have been taken no more than six months before submission. A new photo is required after any significant change in appearance.

Head position & camera distance.

  • Head height, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must be between 33 mm and 36 mm (roughly 73–81% of the photo height).
  • Eyes must sit between 21 mm and 25 mm from the bottom of the photo.

  • Both shoulders must be square to the camera and visible. Three-quarter angles or rotated torsos are not accepted.
  • The full face from chin to crown must be inside the frame with proper top margin.
RECENCY

How recent the photo must be.

Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.

You need a new photo if you’ve had…

  • Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
  • A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
  • Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
  • A gender transition that has changed your appearance

You do not need a new photo just because of…

  • A new hair color
  • Growing or removing a beard or moustache
  • Ordinary, minor aging
  • A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
INFANTS & CHILDREN

Photos for infants and young children.

The egov.kz identity-photo standard relaxes several rules for young children, recognising that infants and toddlers cannot reliably hold a neutral pose.

Children under 6

For children under six years old, the central standard permits deviations in head position, expression, gaze direction, and face centring. The frontal orientation of the head and shoulders is still required.

  • Relaxed framingThe face may occupy between 50% and 80% of the frame height. Where the crown of the head is ambiguous due to hair volume, chin-to-crown measurements between 17 and 40 mm are accepted.
  • Expression and gazeNeutral expression and direct gaze are not strictly enforced. The child does not need to look directly into the lens.
  • Infants under one yearFor babies under one year of age, fully open eyes are not strictly required. Closed or partially open eyes are tolerated.
  • No other people in frameThe child must appear alone in the frame. Supporting hands, props, toys, and other people must not be visible.
COUNTRY NOTES

Other things to know.

A few Kazakhstan-specific quirks are worth knowing before you submit.

No VAC operators

Kazakhstan does not outsource inbound visa intake to VFS Global, BLS, or TLScontact. Paper applications go directly to a Kazakh embassy or consulate, and electronic applications go through the official vmp.gov.kz portal.

Embassy-specific 50×50 mm option

The Embassy in Ottawa (C5 business-immigrant visas) and the Consulate in New York (some student visas) also accept a 50×50 mm print to accommodate US-style 2×2 inch photos. This alternative is not a national standard and should not be assumed at other posts.

Attachment to the form

Posts disagree on how the printed photo attaches to the paper application. Sydney explicitly forbids stapling, while Ottawa and New York permit a staple in the upper right corner. Default to glue or double-sided tape, and never staple through the face.

Six-month recency limit

The photo must have been taken within the six months preceding submission. Older photos, and scans of older prints, are rejected.

PRINT QUALITY

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.

When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.

  • Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
  • Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
  • Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
  • Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
