GENERAL INFORMATION

Hungary visa photos for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Hungary’s visa photo rules are set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Külügyminisztérium) through its Consular Services Directorate, with the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (OIF) handling long-stay residence permits. The same 35×45 mm Schengen format covers Type C short-stay visas (tourist, business, transit) and Type D national long-stay visas (study, work, family reunification, White Card), so a single compliant photo works across every Hungarian visa category.

Submission channels split cleanly by visa type. Type C applications are sticker visas processed at a VFS Global visa application centre or directly at a Hungarian embassy or consulate, where a printed photo is glued (never stapled) to the paper form and live biometrics are captured on site for applicants aged 12 and over. Type D residence permits are uploaded through the EnterHungary portal at enterhungary.gov.hu. Hungary does not operate a short-stay e-visa, so there is no online upload route for tourist or business visas.

Consular officers and VAC staff reject photos that miss the spec on background, framing, expression, or print quality, and a rejected photo means the entire application is returned or delayed. US-standard 2×2 inch prints are refused outright, and staple holes through the photo void it. Bring two identical prints to any VFS or embassy appointment so a second copy is on hand if the consulate requests one.

REQUIREMENTS

Hungary visa photo requirements

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and its VFS Global partners enforce the Schengen biometric standard. These are the subject-side rules that determine whether your photo is accepted.

Expression & pose

  • Neutral expressionHold a neutral expression with the mouth closed. Smiling, showing teeth, frowning, or raised eyebrows are not accepted.
  • Eyes open and visibleBoth eyes must be open, looking directly at the camera, and clear of hair. Red-eye is not permitted and cannot be digitally corrected after the fact.
  • Head facing forwardFace the camera squarely with no tilt, no rotation, and no chin lift. Profile and three-quarter angles are rejected.
  • Shoulders squareSquare the shoulders to the camera so the head sits centered on the body.

Eyewear & lenses

  • EyeglassesGlasses are not permitted. VFS Global Hungary checklists state the photo must be taken without glasses, including reading and prescription frames.
  • Tinted or coloured lensesSunglasses, tinted lenses, and coloured contact lenses that alter natural eye colour are not accepted.

Hair & facial features

  • Hair away from eyesHair must not fall across the eyes or eyebrows. Bangs that cover the forehead or brow line are not permitted.
  • Ears and face edgesBoth ears should be visible, or at minimum both sides of the face must be clearly visible if hair is worn down.
  • Facial hairBeards and moustaches are acceptable provided they reflect the applicant’s everyday appearance and do not obscure the jawline or mouth.

Headwear

  • General ruleHeadwear is not permitted. The November 2025 VFS Hungary checklist specifies that men must appear without a head covering.
  • Religious and medical exceptionsDaily religious head coverings and verified medical headwear are allowed, provided the full face is visible from the chin to above the forehead and both cheek edges are unobstructed.
  • No cast shadowsAny permitted head covering must not cast shadows across the forehead, eyes, or cheeks.

Jewelry & cosmetics

  • JewelryKeep jewelry minimal and unobtrusive. Pieces that reflect light, obscure facial features, or distort the face outline are not accepted.
  • CosmeticsMakeup must be light and must not alter natural skin tone or change the apparent geometry of the face.

Clothing

  • Colour contrastWear clothing that contrasts with the light background. White or very pale tops create a floating-head effect against the white backdrop and are a common cause of rejection.
  • UniformsUniforms of any kind are not permitted. Everyday civilian clothing is required, with daily religious attire as the only exception.

Photo recency

  • Six-month ruleThe photograph must have been taken within the last six months and must reflect the applicant’s current appearance.
  • Appearance changesA new photograph is required after a significant change in appearance, such as major weight change, facial surgery, or new visible facial tattoos or piercings, even if the previous photo is under six months old.

  • Eyes must sit between 21 mm and 25 mm from the bottom of the photo.

  • Both shoulders must be square to the camera and visible. Three-quarter angles or rotated torsos are not accepted.
  • The full face from chin to crown must be inside the frame with proper top margin.
RECENCY

How recent the photo must be.

Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.

You need a new photo if you’ve had…

  • Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
  • A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
  • Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
  • A gender transition that has changed your appearance

You do not need a new photo just because of…

  • A new hair color
  • Growing or removing a beard or moustache
  • Ordinary, minor aging
  • A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
INFANTS & CHILDREN

Photos for infants and young children.

Hungarian missions apply relaxed rules to younger applicants in recognition that infants and small children cannot reliably hold a neutral pose.

Infants (under 12 months)

Photographs of babies are assessed against a softer standard, but the child must still be the only subject in the frame.

  • EyesEyes do not need to be fully open.
  • ExpressionA strictly neutral expression is not required.
  • PoseThe baby may be photographed lying down on a plain white sheet if seated poses are not feasible.
  • No supporting handsHands or the supporting arms of a parent must not appear anywhere in the frame.

Children (1 to 5 years)

Toddlers and young children are held to the adult framing rules with minor concessions to expression and gaze.

  • ExpressionA strictly neutral expression is not mandatory.
  • Eye lineMinor deviation in the eye line is tolerated provided both eyes remain visible.
  • Head directionThe head must still face forward toward the camera.
COUNTRY NOTES

Other things to know.

A few Hungary-specific quirks catch applicants out even when the photo itself is compliant.

Bring two identical prints

VFS Global checklists vary by jurisdiction on whether one or two prints are required, and some consulates such as the Hungarian Embassy in Islamabad ask for two. Bring two identical prints to any appointment; one is glued to the paper form and the second is kept loose in case it is requested.

Glued, never stapled

The photograph is attached to the application form with a glue stick at the visa application centre. Staples or paperclips that pierce the face or background void the photo.

US 2x2 inch photos rejected

Hungary strictly enforces the 35 by 45 mm Schengen size. US-standard 2 by 2 inch (51 by 51 mm) prints are refused at intake and are a frequent cause of delay for applicants based in the United States.

No short-stay e-visa

Hungary does not operate an e-visa portal for Schengen short-stay (Type C) visas. Only Type D residence permit applications and renewals are submitted online through the EnterHungary portal; all other categories require an in-person appointment with a physical print.

PRINT QUALITY

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.

When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.

  • Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
  • Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
  • Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
  • Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
