Equatorial Guinea visa photos and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs standard
Equatorial Guinea visas are issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Diaspora. Since 1 July 2023 the primary application channel has been the official e-Visa portal at equatorialguinea-evisa.com, which is operated on the Ministry’s behalf by VFS Global. The portal accepts a self-supplied digital photograph uploaded with the application; there are no VFS Application Centres for Equatorial Guinea, so the only alternative to the portal is a walk-in or mail-in sticker visa at an embassy.
The Ministry does not publish a granular biometric matrix. Instead, ICAO-standard composition is implicitly enforced, the photograph must be no older than six months, and it must not have been used in any previous travel document. Embassy submissions follow the host country’s passport-photo norm: missions in the United States expect two identical 2×2 in prints, while European posts in London, Madrid and Berlin expect 35×45 mm prints. White is the universally accepted background across every channel.
Reviewers at the e-Visa portal and at each embassy reject photographs that fail the standard, and a rejection returns the application for resubmission, delaying issuance and any planned travel. Submitting a compliant image on the first attempt is the only way to keep the file moving through the Ministry’s queue.
What the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expects in your visa photo
Equatorial Guinea defers to ICAO-standard composition and adds a short list of subject rules. The points below cover everything you control in front of the camera.
Expression & pose
- Face the cameraThe face must be directly toward the camera in full frontal view. Profile and three-quarter angles are not accepted on either the e-Visa portal or any embassy submission.
- Neutral expressionHold a neutral expression in line with standard passport practice. Avoid exaggerated smiles, frowns, or raised eyebrows.
- Eyes open and visibleBoth eyes must be open and clearly visible. Red-eye is grounds for rejection.
Eyewear & lenses
- Clear lenses onlyTinted lenses and sunglasses are not accepted. If prescription glasses are worn, the frames must not obscure the eyes and the lenses must be free of glare.
Hair
- Hair away from the faceHair must not cover the eyes or obscure the outline of the face. Both edges of the face from forehead to chin should be visible.
Headwear
- No hats or capsHeadwear is not permitted in the photo.
- Religious head coveringsHead coverings worn for religious reasons are allowed provided the full face is visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead and both cheeks are unobstructed.
Photo recency
- Taken within six monthsThe photograph must be no older than six months and must reflect the applicant’s current appearance.
- Not previously usedThe same photograph must not have been used in any previous passport, visa, or travel document issued to the applicant.
Photo quality
- True likenessThe image must be a true likeness of the applicant. Structural retouching that alters facial features will cause refusal.
- No shadows on the faceThe face must be evenly lit with no heavy shadows cast across the features by hats, hair, or harsh side light.
Dimensions, resolution & background.
Head position & camera distance.
- Head height, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must be between 33 mm and 36 mm (roughly 73–81% of the photo height).
- Eyes must sit between 21 mm and 25 mm from the bottom of the photo.
- The head must be centered horizontally in the frame with a small symmetrical margin on each side.
- Both shoulders must be square to the camera and visible. Three-quarter angles or rotated torsos are not accepted.
- The full face from chin to crown must be inside the frame with proper top margin.
How recent the photo must be.
Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.
You need a new photo if you’ve had…
- Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
- A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
- Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
- A gender transition that has changed your appearance
You do not need a new photo just because of…
- A new hair color
- Growing or removing a beard or moustache
- Ordinary, minor aging
- A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
Other things to know.
A few details about Equatorial Guinea’s visa channels are worth knowing before you submit.
VFS-operated e-Visa portal
Since 1 July 2023 the primary channel is the VFS-operated e-Visa portal at equatorialguinea-evisa.com. The photo is uploaded with the online application; there is no in-person biometric capture and no physical VFS Visa Application Centre for Equatorial Guinea.
Embassy size varies by mission
Sticker visas issued at embassies use the host country’s local passport-photo size. US missions in Washington D.C. and Houston expect 2 by 2 inch prints, while European missions in London, Madrid, and Berlin expect 35 by 45 mm prints.
Two prints for embassy filings
Embassy submissions typically require two identical printed photographs attached to the application. Carry both prints with your passport when filing in person or by mail.
US applicants apply 60 days ahead
A 2023 procedural rule requires US passport holders to lodge their application at a consular post at least 60 days before travel. This constrains channel choice for Americans even though it does not change the photo itself.

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.
When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.
- Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
- Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
- Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
- Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
