Algeria visa photos issued to the Algerian MFA consular standard
Algeria’s visa photo requirements are set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad (MFA) and applied through its embassies and consulates worldwide. The same biometric specification covers tourist, business, study, work, family, press, and transit categories, so a single compliant photo carries across every visa class.
There is no public Algerian e-visa portal for foreign applicants. Every application is paper-based, and each file must include two identical physical prints on photo-quality paper, originals only. In a small number of jurisdictions, notably France, intake is handled by VFS Global; everywhere else, applicants submit directly to the embassy or consulate by appointment or by mail.
Consular officers review each print against the MFA’s published rules on background, framing, expression, and presentation. Photos that fail the standard, including digitally altered images, headwear outside the religious-veil exception, or tinted lenses, lead to the application being returned or refused, which restarts the queue.
What the Algerian consulate looks for in your visa photo
The Consulate General of Algeria in London publishes the most detailed biometric guidance, and its rules govern how your face, hair, and clothing must appear in the finished print.
Expression & pose
- Neutral expressionThe applicant must hold a neutral expression, neither frowning nor smiling. The mouth must be closed and teeth must not be visible.
- Squared to cameraThe photo must show a full front view of the face and shoulders, squared to the camera. Looking over one shoulder or tilting the head to the side, forward, or back is not accepted.
- Eyes open and visibleEyes must be open, looking straight at the lens, and clearly visible. Red-eye and flash reflections in the eyes are grounds for rejection.
Eyewear & lenses
- Removal preferredThe Algerian consular instructions strongly recommend removing eyeglasses for the photo.
- Tinted lenses prohibitedDark, tinted, transition, or mirrored lenses are prohibited outright. Clear prescription glasses are tolerated only when there is no glare on the lenses and the frames do not obscure any part of the eyes.
Hair & face
- Hair off the eyesHair must not fall across the eyes. Both edges of the face must be clearly visible, so long fringes and side-swept hair that covers the brow or temple are not accepted.
- Forehead visibleBangs or styling that hide the forehead are not permitted under the Algerian biometric standard.
Headwear
- General banHats, caps, and other headwear are prohibited.
- Religious veilsReligious veils worn by women are the sole exception, and only when the full face is clearly visible with no shadows cast across the features.
Cosmetics & appearance
- Natural skin toneThe Consulate General requires the photo to reflect natural skin colour. Heavy cosmetics that change the apparent complexion are not accepted.
- No retouching of appearanceDigital alteration that changes the applicant’s appearance is explicitly forbidden by the Consulate General. This covers blemish removal, skin smoothing, facial reshaping, and beauty filters.
Clothing
- Everyday clothingEveryday civilian clothing is expected. Uniforms are discouraged and the shoulders should remain visible in the frame.
Photo quality
- No shadows on the faceLighting must be uniform with no shadows falling across the face or under the chin. Shadows cast by hair or a religious veil are a common cause of rejection.
- No red-eyeRed-eye from on-camera flash is not accepted and should be avoided at capture rather than corrected after the fact.
- Colour print, originals onlyPhotos must be original colour prints on photo-quality paper with no borders. Scans, photocopies, and photographs of an existing photo are refused.
Dimensions, resolution & background.
Head position & camera distance.
- Head height, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must be between 33 mm and 36 mm (roughly 73–81% of the photo height).
- Eyes must sit between 20 mm and 25 mm from the bottom of the photo.
- The head must be centered horizontally in the frame with a small symmetrical margin on each side.
- Both shoulders must be square to the camera and visible. Three-quarter angles or rotated torsos are not accepted.
- The full face from chin to crown must be inside the frame with proper top margin.
How recent the photo must be.
Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.
You need a new photo if you’ve had…
- Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
- A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
- Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
- A gender transition that has changed your appearance
You do not need a new photo just because of…
- A new hair color
- Growing or removing a beard or moustache
- Ordinary, minor aging
- A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
Other things to know.
A few quirks of the Algerian visa process catch applicants out even when the photo itself is compliant.
North America size variant
Applications submitted through the Embassy of Algeria in Washington DC or the Consulate General in New York accept and typically require 2 x 2 in (51 x 51 mm) US-style photos rather than the 35 x 45 mm format used elsewhere. Match the print size to the jurisdiction you are filing in, since a 35 x 45 mm print in New York or a 2 x 2 in print in London or Paris is likely to be returned.
Two identical prints
Every Algerian visa application requires exactly two identical physical prints, regardless of category or jurisdiction. One print is affixed to each copy of the application form.
Name written on the back
The Consulate General in London instructs applicants to write their first and last name in pencil on the back of each print before submission.
Paper-based channel only
Algeria operates no public e-visa portal for foreign applicants. All submissions are made on paper to an embassy, a consulate, or (in France) the VFS Global visa application centre, with physical photo prints attached.

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.
When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.
- Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
- Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
- Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
- Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
