Dominica visa photos and the Immigration Department
Visa photographs for the Commonwealth of Dominica are reviewed by the Immigration Department within the Ministry of National Security and Home Affairs, with intake also handled by Dominica’s High Commissions, Embassies, and honorary consulates abroad. The official visa pages call for two recent passport-sized photographs, and consular officers apply the same biometric standard used for Dominica passport photography to every visa file they process.
Dominica does not use a third-party visa application centre, and there is no general e-visa portal. Visitor, business, student, employment, transit, and residence applications move through paper channels at the Immigration Department in Roseau or at a Dominica diplomatic mission, while the WIN Extended Stay Visa is the only category that accepts a digital photo upload through windominica.gov.dm. Applications filed through US-jurisdiction posts may instead be submitted on a 2×2 inch print, so the receiving post should always be matched to the print size.
Photographs that do not meet the spec are returned with the application, which delays the file and can require a fresh submission with new prints. Officers check for a recent likeness (within the last six months), a clean frontal pose with both ears visible, and clothing and eyewear that comply with consular guidance. Two identical prints on photographic paper are required per application.
What the Dominica Immigration Department expects in your visa photo
Consular officers apply Dominica’s passport-photo standard to visa submissions. The rules below cover what the applicant must look like in the final image.
Expression & pose
- Facial expressionKeep a neutral expression. A closed-mouth smile is permitted under Dominica consular guidance, but a fully neutral face is the safest choice.
- Head positionFace the camera squarely with the head level. No tilt, no rotation, no turning toward one shoulder.
- EyesEyes must be open, looking directly at the camera, and clearly visible. Red-eye is not permitted.
- ShouldersSquare the shoulders to the camera. The head and the top of the shoulders should both be in frame.
Eyewear & lenses
- Prescription glassesGlasses are accepted only if there is no glare on the lenses and the frames do not cover any part of the eyes. Removing glasses is recommended.
- Tinted lensesTinted lenses and sunglasses are prohibited. Transition lenses must be fully clear at the time of capture.
Hair & ears
- Ears visibleBoth ears must be visible in the photo. Hair should be tucked back so the ears are not covered.
- Hair across the faceHair must not fall across the eyes or obscure the eyebrows, nose, or mouth.
Headwear
- Hats and capsHeadwear is prohibited except when worn for religious or medical reasons.
- Permitted head coveringsWhen a religious or medical head covering is worn, it must not cast shadows on the face, and the forehead, eyes, cheeks, and both ears must remain fully visible.
Jewelry & cosmetics
- JewelryJewelry must not obscure facial features or cause reflections. Remove anything that could draw attention away from the face.
- CosmeticsEveryday makeup is acceptable as long as it does not alter the natural appearance of the face.
Clothing
- CoverageShoulders must be covered. Sleeveless tops, tank tops, and spaghetti straps are not accepted.
- Prints and patternsBold prints, military-style shirts, and camouflage are not permitted. Choose plain, solid-colored clothing.
- Contrast with backgroundAvoid white clothing, which can blend into the white background and reduce the contrast consular officers expect.
Photo quality
- Shadows on the faceThe face must be evenly lit, with no shadows cast across the cheeks, under the chin, or around the eyes.
- RecencyThe photograph must have been taken within the last six months and must reflect the applicant’s current appearance.
- Print conditionSubmitted prints must be free of creases, tears, marks, or staple holes. Two identical copies are required per application.
Dimensions, resolution & background.
Head position & camera distance.
- Head height, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must be between 31 mm and 36 mm (roughly 69–80% of the photo height).
- Eyes must sit between 22 mm and 26 mm from the bottom of the photo.
- The head must be centered horizontally in the frame with a small symmetrical margin on each side.
- Both shoulders must be square to the camera and visible. Three-quarter angles or rotated torsos are not accepted.
- The full face from chin to crown must be inside the frame with proper top margin.
How recent the photo must be.
Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.
You need a new photo if you’ve had…
- Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
- A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
- Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
- A gender transition that has changed your appearance
You do not need a new photo just because of…
- A new hair color
- Growing or removing a beard or moustache
- Ordinary, minor aging
- A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
Other things to know.
A few details about Dominica’s visa channel are worth knowing before you submit.
No e-visa portal
Dominica does not run a general e-visa system. Visitor, business, student, employment, transit, and residence applications are filed on paper to the Immigration Department in Roseau or to a Dominica High Commission, Embassy, or honorary consulate. The only online channel is the WIN Extended Stay Visa portal.
No VFS or VAC operator
Dominica has not outsourced visa intake to VFS Global, BLS, TLS, or any other visa application centre. Any third-party site advertising a Dominica e-visa is a courier, not a government channel.
US-jurisdiction size variant
Applications filed through the Dominica Embassy in Washington, DC and other US-region consular posts are commonly submitted at 2 x 2 in (51 x 51 mm) instead of the 45 x 38 mm standard. Match the print size to the post that will receive your file.
Two identical prints
Every visa application requires two identical printed photographs on high-quality photographic paper. Submitting a single print, or two prints that do not match, will cause the application to be returned.

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.
When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.
- Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
- Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
- Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
- Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
