GENERAL INFORMATION

Colombia visa photos and the Cancillería SITAC standard

Colombia’s visa photo rules are set by the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores (Cancillería) and applied through the SITAC online platform under Resolución 5477 de 2022. A single specification covers every current category, including Visitor (V), Migrant (M), and Resident (R) visas: a 3×4 cm color image on a white background, recent, head-on, with a clear visage and no accessories, submitted as a JPG no larger than 300 KB.

Colombia does not outsource visa intake to VFS Global, BLS, or any other visa application centre. Applicants upload the photo directly into SITAC, and that uploaded JPG becomes the image printed on the issued e-visa. There is no in-person biometric capture step to fall back on, so the file you upload is the file of record.

The 300 KB upload ceiling is enforced strictly by the portal and is the most common reason submissions fail. A photo that misses the white background, the 3:4 portrait shape, or the ’sin accesorios’ rule will be returned by the visa officer, delaying the application and forcing a fresh upload before review can continue.

REQUIREMENTS

Colombia visa photo requirements

Cancillería’s SITAC portal applies one photo specification across every visitor, migrant, and resident visa category. These are the subject-side rules that must be satisfied in the final image.

Expression & pose

  • Head-on framingThe applicant must face the camera directly in a full-frontal view. Profile and three-quarter angles are not accepted by Cancillería.
  • Neutral expressionConsular guidance calls for a neutral expression with the mouth closed. Smiling, frowning, or other exaggerated expressions are not accepted.
  • Eyes open and visibleBoth eyes must be open and clearly visible, looking straight at the camera. Squinting or closed eyes will cause the upload to be rejected.
  • Clear visageThe face must be fully visible from chin to crown with nothing obstructing the features. Cancillería describes this as a ’rostro despejado’ requirement.

Eyewear & lenses

  • EyeglassesGlasses are not permitted. Colombian consulates read the SITAC ’sin accesorios’ wording as a prohibition on eyewear, and the Quito consulate states this explicitly.
  • Tinted and sunglassesTinted, coloured, and sun lenses are forbidden in all cases. Applicants must remove all eyewear before the photo is taken.

Hair & face

  • Hair away from the faceHair must not cover the eyes, eyebrows, or facial outline. Fringes and bangs that fall across the forehead are not accepted.
  • Ears visibleBoth ears should be visible in the frame. The Frankfurt consular guide and the Film Commission Courtesy Type V instructions both require visible ears.

Headwear

  • Hats and capsHats, caps, and other secular head coverings are prohibited. The head must be uncovered for the photograph.
  • Religious head coveringsReligious or medical head coverings are tolerated in practice provided the full face from chin to forehead remains visible and no shadows are cast across the features.

Jewelry & accessories

  • EarringsEarrings must be removed. The Quito consulate explicitly forbids earrings under the ’without accessories’ rule, alongside glasses.
  • Visible accessoriesCancillería instructs applicants to appear ’sin accesorios.’ Conspicuous jewelry, piercings, and decorative items should be taken off before the photo is captured.

Clothing

  • Everyday clothingOrdinary civilian clothing is expected. Uniforms and garments that resemble official or institutional dress should be avoided.

Photo quality

  • Current appearanceThe image must reflect the applicant’s real and current appearance, as stated in Cancillería consular guidance. Beauty filters, skin smoothing, and other alterations that change biometric features are not accepted.
  • No red-eye or facial shadowsRed-eye, harsh shadows across the face, and glare on the skin will cause rejection. The subject must be evenly lit with natural skin tones.
  • Subject sharpnessThe applicant must hold still so the face is in sharp focus. Motion blur from the subject is grounds for rejection.

  • Eyes must sit between 19 mm and 23 mm from the bottom of the photo.

RECENCY

How recent the photo must be.

Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.

You need a new photo if you’ve had…

  • Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
  • A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
  • Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
  • A gender transition that has changed your appearance

You do not need a new photo just because of…

  • A new hair color
  • Growing or removing a beard or moustache
  • Ordinary, minor aging
  • A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
INFANTS & CHILDREN

Photos for infants and young children.

Cancillería does not publish separate photo rules for minors, so the standard specification applies to children and adults alike. Consular officers exercise informal discretion only for infants who physically cannot meet adult compliance.

Infants (under 12 months)

Colombia has no codified infant relaxation, but consular officers accept reasonable accommodations when a baby cannot hold an adult pose.

  • Expression and eyesNeutral expression and fully open eyes are relaxed in practice for infants who cannot comply. The face must still be visible and unobstructed.
  • Head positionMinor deviation from a perfectly head-on pose is tolerated for babies who cannot hold their head steady, provided the full face remains in view.
  • No adult in frameHands, arms, and bodies of parents or guardians must not appear in the photograph. The infant must be the only person visible.
  • No props or pacifiersPacifiers, toys, bottles, and supporting cushions must not appear in the image.
COUNTRY NOTES

Other things to know.

A few specifics about Colombia’s visa channel are worth flagging separately.

SITAC portal only

Colombia does not use VFS Global, BLS, or TLScontact for its inbound visas. Every application is filed through the Cancillería’s SITAC platform, and the photo is uploaded directly by the applicant.

300 KB upload ceiling

The SITAC uploader strictly enforces a 300 KB maximum on the JPG photo file. Exceeding this cap is the single most common cause of submission failure.

No square formats

A 2x2 inch or 50x50 mm photo is not accepted. The aspect ratio must be 3:4 portrait, and many commercial studios still advertise the wrong size for Colombia.

Courtesy Type V visas

Audiovisual production crews applying for Courtesy Type V visas through the Colombian Film Commission must meet the same 3:4 JPG format with extra emphasis on visible ears and the absence of any light reflections.

PRINT QUALITY

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.

When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.

  • Print on photographic-quality paper at 350 DPI minimum.
  • Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
  • Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
  • Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
