GENERAL INFORMATION

Azerbaijan visa photos and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs standard

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan (MFA) sets the photo standard for Azerbaijani visas. The central print size is 30 by 40 millimetres on a plain, white, non-reflective background, with a neutral, full-face view taken within the last six months. The same rule set covers tourist, business, study, work, treatment, private visit, and transit visas.

Sticker visas are filed through the MFA’s electronic application portal at eapplication.mfa.gov.az and then submitted to an Azerbaijani embassy or consulate, where two identical printed copies of the photo are attached to the application. Azerbaijani embassies in Schengen-area countries, including Berlin and Vienna, commonly request the 35 by 45 millimetre European format instead, so applicants should confirm the size with the consulate handling their file. The ASAN e-visa channel at evisa.gov.az runs separately and centres on the passport bio-page scan rather than a standalone face photo.

Enforcement of the MFA spec is strict. Photo issues are one of the most common causes of visa rejection and resubmission, and consular officers reject prints that show a tilted head, a non-neutral expression, shadows on the face or background, tinted lenses, or hair across the eyes. A non-compliant photo means the application is returned and processing restarts from the beginning.

REQUIREMENTS

Azerbaijan visa photo requirements

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan enforces ICAO-style biometric criteria on every visa photo. The rules below cover how the applicant must appear in the frame.

Expression & pose

  • Neutral expressionThe applicant must hold a neutral expression with the mouth closed and teeth not visible. Smiling, frowning, and other expressions are grounds for rejection.
  • Full-face viewThe applicant must face the camera directly. Profile, three-quarter, and angled views are not accepted.
  • Eyes open and visibleBoth eyes must be open, fully visible, and looking straight at the camera.

Eyewear & lenses

  • Sunglasses and tinted lensesSunglasses and tinted lenses are prohibited in Azerbaijani visa photos.
  • Prescription glassesClear prescription glasses are permitted only if there is no glare on the lenses and the frames do not cover any part of the eyes. Removing glasses for the photo is recommended.

Hair & facial features

  • Hair off the faceHair must not fall across the eyes or obscure the eyebrows, mouth, or jawline. Bangs that cover the forehead are not accepted.
  • Ears and facial featuresThe face must be fully visible from chin to forehead so that biometric features can be matched.

Headwear

  • Religious or medical onlyHats, caps, and other headwear are not permitted. Religious or medical head coverings are allowed only if the full face from chin to forehead remains visible and the covering does not cast shadows.

Jewelry & accessories

  • Nothing obscuring the faceJewelry, piercings, and accessories must not obscure facial features or create glare. Items that hide any part of the face are not accepted.

Clothing

  • Everyday clothingEveryday civilian clothing is required. Uniforms and uniform-like attire are not accepted. Religious dress is permitted provided facial features remain fully visible.

Photo quality

  • No shadows on the faceShadows cast across the face, neck, or under the chin will cause rejection. The applicant must be evenly lit so no facial feature is darkened.
  • No red-eyeRed-eye is not accepted. The applicant must be positioned so the flash does not reflect through the pupils.
  • Recent photographThe photo must have been taken within the last six months and must reflect the applicant’s current appearance. Significant changes (surgery, major weight change, new visible tattoos or piercings) require a fresh photo.

RECENCY

How recent the photo must be.

Your visa photo must have been taken within the last six months. A new photo is required sooner whenever your appearance has changed in a way that makes the old photo no longer recognizable.

You need a new photo if you’ve had…

  • Facial surgery or a major change to facial structure
  • A significant gain or loss of weight that visibly changes your face
  • Large facial tattoos or piercings added or removed
  • A gender transition that has changed your appearance

You do not need a new photo just because of…

  • A new hair color
  • Growing or removing a beard or moustache
  • Ordinary, minor aging
  • A new hairstyle that still leaves the face fully visible
INFANTS & CHILDREN

Photos for infants and young children.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not publish separate infant rules, but standard biometric criteria are applied with practical tolerances for very young children.

Infants (under 12 months)

Infants must appear alone in the frame against the same plain white background as adults. Pose and expression tolerances are relaxed in practice.

  • No other people in frameHands, arms, supporting cushions, and other people must not be visible. The infant must appear alone in the photo.
  • ExpressionA neutral expression is preferred, but any natural infant expression is tolerated.
  • EyesClosed eyes are tolerated for infants under one year. Older children must follow the adult rule of open eyes looking at the camera.
  • Head positionThe head should face forward, but moderate tilt and rotation are accepted given the difficulty of posing a baby.
COUNTRY NOTES

Other things to know.

A few details about Azerbaijan’s visa workflow trip up applicants more than the photo rules themselves.

ASAN e-visa vs sticker visa

Tourists who apply through the ASAN portal at evisa.gov.az upload the passport bio-page rather than a face photo. The 30x40 mm face photo specification applies to the sticker-visa flow submitted through eapplication.mfa.gov.az and the embassy. Prepare a compliant face photo in case the consulate requests one.

European embassy size variant

Azerbaijani embassies in Schengen-area countries, including Berlin and Vienna, commonly request 35x45 mm prints to align with local norms instead of the central MFA 30x40 mm. Verify the required size with the specific consulate before printing.

Two identical prints required

Embassy submissions require two identical printed copies on photographic paper. Prints must be pristine, with no creases, smudges, or staple marks. Some consulates ask the applicant to write their name on the back of each photo.

Strict biometric enforcement

Although the MFA does not publish exact millimetre or degree tolerances, it explicitly applies biometric identification criteria. Photo issues are a leading cause of rejection, so off-axis poses, expressions, and obscured features are turned away even where numeric limits are not stated.

PRINT QUALITY

Print-quality requirements for in-person submissions.

When you submit a printed photo at a visa application centre, the paper, finish, and ink all matter. The points below cover the standards most consular missions accept.

  • Print on photographic-quality paper at 300 DPI minimum.
  • Use a matte or semi-gloss finish; high-gloss can produce reflections that confuse biometric scanners.
  • Do not retouch, crop, or alter the photo after printing.
  • Bring at least two identical prints when the submission channel calls for paper photos.
